Daniel Rooney ’21 and Dr. Jeffrey Johnson - Student Researcher Raises the Buford

For a researcher, there are few feelings more rewarding than discovering the source for which you’ve been searching. For American Studies major Daniel Rooney ’21, this source was the key to unlocking the stories of more than 200 political radicals deported from the United States aboard the US Army Transport Buford in 1919 and the families they left behind. Rooney’s findings form a chapter in a forthcoming book. In this episode, Rooney and his advisor, Dr. Jeffrey Johnson, professor of history, tell the tragic story of the Buford and take us into the trenches of academic research and publishing where their work continues.
